What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use sentence-level context to infer the meaning of an unfamiliar or multiple-meaning word. They examine definitions, actions, descriptions, and contrasts within the same sentence.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student points to the specific part of the sentence that narrows the meaning. The student substitutes a possible meaning, rereads, and adjusts it if the sentence no longer makes sense.

Common Misconceptions

Students may use only the sentence topic or their first association with the word. They may select a nearby detail that describes something else and call it a context clue.

How to Assess It

Show the sentence, ‘The trail was rugged, with sharp rocks and deep holes.’ Ask students to define rugged and cite the clue.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Highlight target words and clue phrases in different colors, then connect each pair with an explanation arrow.

  2. Ask, ‘Which phrase most clearly explains the target word, and what other meaning can we rule out?’

  3. Play Context Replacement by swapping in proposed meanings and keeping only those that preserve the sentence's sense.

  4. Use a safety sign or set of directions to infer an unfamiliar word before carrying out the instruction.
