Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students use information from illustrations and text features to explain story elements or informational topics. They apply visual information instead of merely naming it.
What Mastery Looks Like: The student combines a picture, caption, heading, or diagram with written details to explain a character, setting, event, or topic. The information is accurate and relevant.
Common Misconceptions: Students may copy a caption without explaining what it adds. They may focus on decorative images or ignore the words connected to a feature.
How to Assess It: Give one illustrated literary or informational page. Ask students to explain what a picture or text feature teaches about a story element or topic.

Lesson moves

Add sticky notes to pictures, captions, and headings showing what each teaches the reader.
Ask students what they understand only after using the illustration or feature.
Play Feature Clue Hunt with story and informational pages.
Use a map, sign, or schedule to explain a real place, event, or routine.
