What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify information shown visually, orally, or quantitatively and explain how it contributes to understanding. They integrate charts, graphs, diagrams, timelines, animations, or illustrations with written text.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student extracts accurate information from a nonprose element and links it to the text’s ideas. The explanation states what becomes clearer or more precise.

Common Misconceptions

Students may describe a visual without interpreting its information. They may ignore labels, units, scale, sequence, or its connection to the written text.

How to Assess It

Give a paragraph with a related chart or diagram. Ask students to state one fact from the visual and explain how it deepens understanding.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Add sticky notes linking facts in a chart, diagram, or timeline to sentences in the text.

  2. Ask students what information is easier to understand visually than in words.

  3. Play Visual Evidence Hunt with mixed text and graphic sources.

  4. Use a transit map, weather graph, or school timeline to answer a real question.
