What Students Need to Do: Students identify how pictures, text features, and written details support a viewpoint or purpose. They explain how a chosen feature helps communicate the text’s message.
What Mastery Looks Like: The student identifies a specific illustration, heading, caption, or detail and links it to viewpoint or purpose. The explanation goes beyond naming the feature.
Common Misconceptions: Students may list features without explaining their function. They may guess purpose from topic alone or confuse their own opinion with the text’s viewpoint.
How to Assess It: Show a page with an illustration and text feature. Ask students to identify one example and explain how it supports the text’s viewpoint or purpose.
