What Students Need to Do: Students explain how pictures and written details help reveal who is telling, what the text wants readers to understand, or why it was created. They connect visual evidence to the text.
What Mastery Looks Like: The student points to an illustration and a written detail that support a narrator’s view or an author’s purpose. The explanation names the connection instead of merely describing the picture.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat an illustration as decoration and ignore its meaning. They may name a purpose from personal opinion without using visual or written evidence.
How to Assess It: Show one illustrated page from a story or informational text. Ask students how one picture detail and one text detail support the viewpoint or purpose.
