Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students use both pictures and written details to talk about characters, setting, events, or an informational topic. They combine evidence from the two sources.
What Mastery Looks Like: The student cites one illustration detail and one written detail that explain a story element or topic. The two details are accurate and connected in the response.
Common Misconceptions: Students may describe only what appears in the picture or repeat only the words. They may choose visual details unrelated to the story element or topic.
How to Assess It: Give an illustrated page and ask students what they learn about the setting or topic from the picture and from the words.

Lesson moves

Use sticky notes to mark one picture clue and one word clue on an illustrated page.
Ask students what the picture adds that the words do not state directly.
Play Picture-and-Text Match with details from the same pages.
Read an illustrated school map or brochure and combine labels with visual clues to explain a place.
