What Students Need to Do: Students describe how a picture relates to the words in a text. They explain what the illustration shows, adds, or helps readers understand.
What Mastery Looks Like: The student points to a picture detail and connects it to a specific word, sentence, event, or fact. The response goes beyond simply naming objects.
Common Misconceptions: Students may describe the picture without mentioning the words. They may assume every pictured detail appears in or matters to the text.
How to Assess It: Show one illustrated page after reading it aloud. Ask the student to explain how one picture detail connects to the words.
