What Students Need to Do: Students find a specific fact, reason, or picture detail that supports an idea in a text. They explain how the information connects to the idea.
What Mastery Looks Like: The student states a simple idea and points to accurate support from the author or illustrator. The explanation shows why the selected detail belongs with the idea.
Common Misconceptions: Students may choose an interesting detail that does not support the idea. They may rely on personal knowledge instead of information provided in the text.
How to Assess It: Give an illustrated paragraph and one idea about it. Ask students to mark one word detail or picture detail that supports the idea and explain the connection.
