What Students Need to Do: Students explain how a specific point made by an author or illustrator is supported by relevant reasons. They connect each reason to the idea it supports.
What Mastery Looks Like: The student states a point and identifies a reason from words or pictures that supports it. The student explains the logical connection in simple language.
Common Misconceptions: Students may choose any nearby detail as a reason. They may repeat the point rather than explain why the supporting information matters.
How to Assess It: Give a short text making one clear point with two possible reasons. Ask students to choose the relevant reason and explain how it supports the point.
