What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how a text supports its claims with reasons and evidence. They distinguish the claim from the information offered to support it.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student states a claim and identifies a relevant reason and evidence. The explanation shows how the support makes the claim more convincing.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may mistake a topic or fact for the claim. They may choose evidence that is interesting but unrelated or simply restate the claim.
How to Assess It
- Give a short argument with one claim and three details. Ask students to identify the claim, select relevant support, and explain the connection.
