What Students Need to Do: Students explain how claims in a text are supported with relevant reasons and evidence. They connect each piece of support to the claim it strengthens.
What Mastery Looks Like: The student identifies a clear claim, reason, and evidence and explains their relationship. The student rejects details that do not support the claim.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse a reason with the claim itself. They may select any factual detail as evidence without checking relevance.
How to Assess It: Give a short argument with one claim and four details. Ask students to select relevant reasons and evidence and explain one connection.
