Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students ask and answer questions about key ideas and details in literary and informational texts. Their answers show that they understand the text, not just one isolated word or picture.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can form a question that targets an important idea or detail. The student answers in a complete thought and points to information in the text that supports the answer.
Common Misconceptions: Students may ask questions based only on personal curiosity when the text cannot answer them. They may copy a sentence without explaining how it answers the question.
How to Assess It: Give students a short paragraph and ask a why or how question about a key detail. Have them answer and underline the information that helped.

Lesson moves

Ask, ‘Which question would help a reader understand the most important idea, and why?’
Play Text Question Sort by grouping questions as answerable, partly answerable, or not answered by the passage.
Read bus or museum directions and ask questions that reveal the main steps and important details.
