Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students ask questions before, during, and after hearing or reading a literary or informational text. They answer questions by using details from the words or pictures.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can pose a relevant question about a story or informational text. The student can answer a teacher's or peer's question with a detail that fits the text.
Common Misconceptions: Students may tell a personal story instead of asking about the text. They may answer a different question or offer a detail that does not fit the text.
How to Assess It: Read a short picture book page aloud. Ask one question about the page, then have the student answer it and ask a new question.

Lesson moves

Give pairs a wordless picture-book page and question cards; students choose a card, ask the question, and point to an answer.
After a read-aloud, ask, ‘What are you wondering, and which part of the text could help us answer?’
Play Question Toss: catch a soft ball, ask a text question, answer a classmate's question, then pass the ball.
Use a classroom sign or lunch menu and have students ask and answer questions needed to use it.
