What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students develop and answer questions about literary and informational texts. They locate specific, relevant details to support direct answers and reasonable inferences.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can ask a focused question and find the strongest detail that answers it. For an inference, the student combines that detail with what is reasonably known and explains the connection.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may select the first related sentence rather than the detail that actually supports the answer. They may call a guess an inference without connecting it to the text.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short passage and one inference question. Ask them to answer, underline one specific supporting detail, and explain how it supports the inference.
