What Students Need to Do: Students ask and answer questions about the most important ideas and details in stories and informational texts. Their questions help them notice who, what, where, when, why, and how.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can ask a relevant question before, during, or after reading. The student answers with a detail that matches the text rather than an unrelated memory or guess.
Common Misconceptions: Students may ask about something outside the text or repeat a detail without answering the question. They may confuse a small detail with the main event or idea.
How to Assess It: Read a short passage aloud and ask one question about a key detail. Have the student answer, then create another question the passage can answer.

Lesson moves

Place question-word cards beside a shared text; students choose a card, ask a question, and locate the answer.
Pause during a read-aloud and ask, ‘What important question can we answer from what we know so far?’
