What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use relationships between particular words to understand each one more fully. They identify connections such as similarity, opposition, degree, cause, sequence, part, category, or analogy when context supports them.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student names the precise relationship and explains its direction. The student uses what is known about one term to infer a defensible meaning or distinction for another.

Common Misconceptions

Students may say words are related because they appear in the same topic. They may reverse a directional relationship or infer a definition broader than the connection supports.

How to Assess It

Give students four word pairs with different relationships. Ask them to label each relationship and explain how it clarifies both words.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Connect word cards with labeled arrows for similarity, opposition, cause, sequence, part, category, degree, or analogy.

  2. Ask, ‘Exactly how are these words related, and what can that relationship tell us about each?’

  3. Play Relationship Precision by replacing vague related labels with specific, directional explanations.

  4. Map specialized terms in a system, showing category, part, sequence, and cause relationships among them.
