What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify real-life connections between words and how those words are used. They link vocabulary to familiar objects, actions, places, experiences, and observations.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can give an accurate example from life and explain how it demonstrates the word. The student can recognize the word in a new situation beyond the first example learned.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may tell a related story without showing the target meaning. They may connect a word to one memorized example and fail to recognize another valid use.
How to Assess It
- Give students the words fragile, crowded, and balance. Ask for a real-life example of each and an explanation of the connection.

Ways to Teach It
Match vocabulary cards to classroom objects or actions, then photograph or draw a second real-life example.
Ask, ‘Where have you experienced something crowded, and what made that word fit?’
Play Example or Nonexample by sorting real-life situations and explaining which feature proves each choice.
Create a school vocabulary walk that labels real examples of target words in hallways, rooms, and outdoor spaces.
