What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use words to identify and describe people, places, objects, actions, and experiences. They connect descriptive vocabulary to specific traits and real uses.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student chooses words such as friendly or helpful based on observable actions. The student explains the connection and uses the word accurately in a new description.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may label a person with a positive word without naming evidence from behavior. They may confuse related qualities or treat one action as proof of a broad permanent trait.
How to Assess It
- Show students three short character scenarios. Ask them to choose precise describing words and cite the action that makes each word fit.

Ways to Teach It
Match character-action cards with precise describing words, then discuss whether each connection has enough evidence.
Ask, ‘Which action shows that this person is helpful rather than simply friendly?’
Play Description Evidence Match by pairing adjectives with behaviors and rejecting unsupported labels.
Write appreciative notes that identify a person's helpful action and use an accurate describing word.
