What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use accurate words to identify and describe people, places, objects, actions, and experiences. They connect each describing word to observable or sensory features in real use.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student chooses a word such as spicy or juicy because it matches a specific feature. The student explains the connection and uses the word in a clear identifying or describing sentence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use general words such as good or nice instead of describing the actual feature. They may select a sensory word based on preference rather than evidence.
How to Assess It
- Show pictures or samples of three familiar foods. Ask students to identify each and choose precise describing words, explaining the features that support them.

Ways to Teach It
Use safe food pictures or samples with sensory word cards, then match and justify each description.
Ask, ‘Which word best describes this food's texture or taste, and what evidence supports it?’
Play Description Match by pairing precise words with objects and removing vague or unsupported choices.
Write accurate menu descriptions that help another student identify and imagine familiar foods.
