What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use words to identify and describe the people, places, objects, actions, and experiences around them. They connect each word to real examples that make its meaning clear.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student selects an accurate identifying or describing word for a familiar situation. The student explains the connection through speech, drawing, movement, or a simple sentence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name an object without describing it or use one favorite adjective for many different features. They may repeat a word correctly without connecting it to an observable example.
How to Assess It
- Give the student pictures of familiar rooms and objects. Ask for words that identify and describe each, with an explanation or demonstration of the connection.
