What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use cause-and-effect, part-and-whole, and item-and-category relationships to understand words. They name the relationship and use it to infer or clarify both terms.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student identifies the correct relationship and explains the direction between the words. The student uses known information about one term to make an accurate inference about the other.

Common Misconceptions

Students may notice that words are related without naming how or reverse cause and effect. They may confuse one category member with a part of the whole.

How to Assess It

Give students three word pairs representing cause and effect, part and whole, and item and category. Ask them to label and explain each relationship.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Connect word cards with arrows labeled causes, results from, is part of, contains, belongs to, or includes.

  2. Ask, ‘Is a petal part of a flower or an item in a flower category, and why?’

  3. Play Relationship Relay by matching pairs, selecting directional labels, and using each relationship to clarify meaning.

  4. Map vocabulary relationships in an ecosystem or machine, identifying causes, effects, parts, wholes, items, and categories.
