What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use synonym, antonym, and analogy relationships to understand words more precisely. They identify the type and direction of a relationship and transfer it to an unknown term.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student explains how a synonym or antonym clarifies meaning without claiming exact equivalence. The student completes an analogy because both pairs share the same defensible relationship.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose analogy words that share a topic but not a relationship. They may treat synonyms as interchangeable in tone or select an antonym from the wrong contextual sense.
How to Assess It
- Give students one synonym pair, one antonym pair, and an incomplete analogy. Ask them to explain each relationship and complete the analogy with reasoning.
