What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students show word understanding by identifying and explaining synonyms and antonyms. They consider context because related or opposite words are not always interchangeable.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student supplies a fitting synonym and antonym for a word in a sentence. The student explains small differences that affect which synonym works best.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat near-synonyms as exact replacements in every context. They may choose a word that is related but neither similar nor opposite in meaning.
How to Assess It
- Give the sentence, The trail was narrow. Ask students to replace narrow with a synonym, provide an antonym, and explain how each changes meaning.
