What Students Need to Do

Students explore how words are related and how similar words differ in meaning. They sort words into categories, define them by attributes, use them to identify and describe, and compare shades of meaning.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can explain why words belong in a category and name a defining attribute. The student chooses among related verbs or adjectives to express the intended action, intensity, or description.

Common Misconceptions

Students may sort by a surface feature that does not define the category. They may treat related verbs or adjectives as interchangeable and overlook differences in manner or intensity.

How to Assess It

Give students six mixed words to categorize, then ask them to define one category and choose the best verb or adjective for a pictured situation.
