What Students Need to Do

Students explain figurative language, common sayings, and relationships among words. They interpret similes, metaphors, idioms, adages, and proverbs in context and connect words through synonyms and antonyms.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student explains what a comparison or saying communicates beyond its literal words. The student uses synonym and antonym relationships to clarify meaning while noticing that related words are not always interchangeable.

Common Misconceptions

Students may interpret an idiom literally or identify a comparison without explaining what it suggests. They may treat synonyms as identical or choose an antonym that does not fit the same context.

How to Assess It

Give students a simile, a common proverb, and a target word in context. Ask them to explain both expressions and supply a fitting synonym and antonym.
