What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students interpret figurative language, including allusions, and use synonyms, antonyms, and analogies to clarify word relationships. They distinguish connotations among words that share similar denotations.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student explains a figure or allusion through relevant context and background knowledge. The student completes meaningful analogies and selects among near synonyms based on the tone or association needed.

Common Misconceptions

Students may recognize an allusion's source without explaining its role or force an analogy based on a surface feature. They may treat equal denotation as equal tone.

How to Assess It

Give students an allusive sentence, an analogy, and three near synonyms. Ask them to interpret the allusion, complete the relationship, and compare connotations.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build vocabulary analysis boards linking allusions, contextual meanings, analogies, denotations, and connotation scales.

  2. Ask, ‘What background idea does this allusion activate, and how does it shape the passage?’

  3. Play Analogy and Connotation Challenge by completing word relationships and choosing the near synonym that fits an assigned tone.

  4. Analyze allusions and loaded word choices in speeches, editorials, or advertisements for their audience effects.
