What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students distinguish connotations among words with similar denotations. They compare the feelings, attitudes, formality, and social judgments carried by choices such as polite, diplomatic, and condescending.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student states the shared basic meaning and explains the distinct association of each word. The student chooses a word whose connotation fits the speaker, audience, tone, and purpose.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may rank connotation as simply good or bad or rely on personal preference alone. They may ignore context and assume near synonyms remain interchangeable in every sentence.
How to Assess It
- Give students a scenario and the words refined, respectful, polite, diplomatic, and condescending. Ask them to choose two possibilities and compare their effects.
