What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students analyze nuances among words that share similar denotations. They compare connotation, intensity, register, precision, stance, and the audience effects created by each choice.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student states the common core meaning and identifies several meaningful distinctions among near synonyms. The student selects the word whose nuance best serves the context and explains the tradeoff.

Common Misconceptions

Students may rely on thesaurus proximity as proof of interchangeability or describe nuance as merely stronger and weaker. They may ignore grammar, register, disciplinary use, or speaker stance.

How to Assess It

Give students a passage and four near synonyms for one key word. Ask them to compare nuances, choose the best replacement, and analyze the effect.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Map near synonyms across axes for denotation, intensity, formality, approval, precision, and stance, then justify placements.

  2. Ask, ‘Which word best fits the speaker's stance, and what different implication would another choice create?’

  3. Play Nuance Revision by replacing one word for new audience and tone cards while preserving the core denotation.

  4. Edit wording in a press release and critical review to create distinct stances toward the same event.
