What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students interpret figurative language, including personification, and use word relationships to clarify meaning. They analyze cause and effect, part and whole, item and category, and connotations among similar denotations.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student explains what a figure suggests in context and how it shapes meaning. The student uses a stated relationship accurately and distinguishes positive, negative, or neutral associations among related words.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may identify personification without interpreting its effect or confuse a related item with a whole category. They may assume words with similar definitions create the same tone.
How to Assess It
- Give students a personified line, a word-relationship pair, and three near synonyms. Ask them to interpret, label the relationship, and compare connotations.
