What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students interpret figures of speech, including irony and puns, and use word relationships to clarify meaning. They distinguish connotations among words with similar denotations and analyze their contextual effects.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student explains the contrast or double meaning that makes irony or a pun work. The student identifies useful word relationships and selects near synonyms based on precise associations and tone.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call any surprising event ironic or explain only one meaning in a pun. They may state that words are related without naming how or treat shared denotation as identical effect.
How to Assess It
- Give students an ironic line, a pun, and three near synonyms. Ask them to explain the figures, identify relationships, and compare connotations.

Ask, ‘What contrast makes this line ironic, and what context prevents a literal reading?’
Play Pun, Irony, or Nuance by classifying examples and explaining the language mechanism in each.
Analyze irony, wordplay, and loaded synonyms in headlines, cartoons, or public campaigns.
