What Students Need to Do

Students interpret similes, metaphors, idioms, adages, and proverbs in context. They also use synonym, antonym, and homograph relationships to clarify meanings and distinctions among words.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student explains what figurative language or a common saying contributes beyond literal wording. The student uses a word relationship to choose the correct sense and explain how related meanings differ.

Common Misconceptions

Students may identify a figure of speech without interpreting it or paraphrase a proverb's topic instead of its message. They may treat synonyms as interchangeable or miss a homograph's contextual meaning.

How to Assess It

Give students a metaphor, proverb, and homograph in context. Ask them to interpret the first two and use word relationships to explain the third.

   Build interpretation boards linking figurative phrases, sayings, contexts, synonyms, antonyms, homographs, and precise meanings.

   Ask, ‘What does this metaphor suggest, and how does the context shape its meaning?’
