Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students recognize common idioms, adages, and proverbs and explain their meanings in context. They distinguish the accepted message from the literal wording.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student paraphrases a saying accurately and connects its message to the surrounding situation. The student can explain whether it expresses an idiomatic idea, observation, or piece of advice.
Common Misconceptions: Students may interpret the words literally or give a vague moral unrelated to the scenario. They may use a familiar saying in a context where its message does not apply.
How to Assess It: Give students an idiom and proverb in short passages. Ask them to paraphrase each and explain which passage detail makes the saying relevant.

Lesson moves

Pair saying cards with literal illustrations, accurate paraphrases, and situations where the message applies.
Ask, ‘What advice does this proverb offer, and why does it fit the character's decision?’
Play Saying Scenario Match by pairing idioms, adages, and proverbs with fitting contexts and rejecting mismatches.
Collect sayings from community interviews and create a class guide explaining their meanings and uses.
