What Students Need to Do: Students use relationships among synonyms, antonyms, and homographs to understand words more precisely. They compare related meanings and use context to select among identical spellings or near meanings.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student explains how a synonym or antonym clarifies a target word without claiming exact equivalence. The student identifies the correct meaning of a homograph from its sentence.
Common Misconceptions: Students may substitute any thesaurus word without checking nuance or grammar. They may pronounce or define a homograph using the first meaning they know despite contradictory context.
How to Assess It: Give students one target word with a synonym and antonym, plus two homograph sentences. Ask them to explain all relationships and contextual meanings.

Lesson moves
