What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students sort familiar words into meaningful categories such as colors, clothing, foods, or tools. The sorting helps them understand the larger concept each category represents.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can place words into a stated category and explain the shared concept. The student can suggest another category member and justify why it belongs.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may sort by an accidental feature, such as size, when the category concerns use. They may place a word by personal association rather than the concept the group shares.
How to Assess It
- Give students picture-word cards for clothing, foods, and tools. Ask them to sort the cards, name each category, and justify one choice.
