What Students Need to Do: Students connect frequently used verbs and adjectives to their opposites. They use pictures, actions, and authentic situations to show how the paired meanings contrast.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can supply an appropriate opposite for a familiar action or quality and demonstrate both meanings. The student uses each word accurately in speech or a simple sentence.
Common Misconceptions: Students may name any different word instead of a true opposite. They may match words from different kinds, such as pairing an action verb with an unrelated describing word.
How to Assess It: Show four familiar action or describing cards. Ask the student to name and demonstrate an opposite for each, then use one pair in sentences.

Lesson moves

Pair verb and adjective cards with opposite pictures, then act out or describe both meanings.
Ask, ‘What is the opposite of empty here, and how can we prove the two words contrast?’
Play Opposite Charades with familiar verbs and adjectives, requiring the guesser to name both words in the pair.
Use opposite words while opening and closing containers, filling and emptying cups, or sorting clean and dirty materials.
