What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use cause-and-effect relationships and comparisons in a text to infer word meaning. They trace how the target word relates to the event, result, similarity, or difference around it.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student identifies the relationship that supplies the clue and explains the target word through it. The student tests the proposed meaning in the full sentence or paragraph.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may notice a cause or comparison without explaining how it defines the word. They may reverse cause and effect or select a shared trait that does not fit the target meaning.
How to Assess It
- Give students one cause-and-effect sentence and one comparison sentence with target words. Ask them to define each word and map the clue relationship.

Use arrows and comparison diagrams to connect target words with causes, effects, similarities, and differences in short passages.
Ask, ‘How does the stated effect help define this action, and what meaning would not fit?’
