Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students recognize that spoken words can be written with specific ordered letter sequences. They connect a spoken word with its stable printed form.
What Mastery Looks Like: The student matches a familiar spoken word to its printed form and notices when letters are missing or rearranged. The student treats the whole sequence as one word.
Common Misconceptions: Students may match by first letter alone or think any letters can represent the word. They may confuse a word’s letters with a picture of its meaning.
How to Assess It: Say three familiar words and show matching word cards plus distractors. Ask the student to select each printed word and explain one clue.

Lesson moves
