What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students initiate and sustain evidence-based discussions of complex topics, texts, and issues. They set norms, goals, deadlines, and roles, connect discussion to broader ideas, include others, test conclusions, and respond thoughtfully to diverse perspectives.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student arrives prepared, uses evidence to advance the exchange, and helps peers clarify, verify, or challenge ideas. The student summarizes agreement and disagreement accurately, then qualifies a view or makes a new connection when reasoning warrants it.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use evidence as a speech rather than engaging with others or invite participation only after decisions are made. They may summarize disagreement unfairly, challenge people instead of ideas, or claim a changed view without explaining why.
How to Assess It
- Run a seminar with student-set norms and roles. Check each student for evidence, inclusion, a clarifying or challenging question, an accurate synthesis, and an evidence-based reflection.

Ways to Teach It
Give seminar teams evidence packets and blank norm, goal, role, and deadline cards to structure their own discussion.
Ask, ‘Where do the speakers agree and disagree, and which evidence creates a new connection or qualification?’
Play Clarify, Verify, Challenge, Connect by drawing a required discussion move before responding to another speaker.
Simulate a public forum where students research positions, include quieter voices, test conclusions, and publish a balanced synthesis.
