What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students prepare for discussions, follow shared norms, and carry out assigned roles. They pose and answer questions, elaborate on others' remarks, express ideas persuasively, and draw conclusions from the group's learning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student uses preparation to contribute a clear idea and fulfills a role while listening closely. The student extends a peer's point with a question or comment and states a supported conclusion afterward.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat persuasion as speaking louder or repeating a position. They may complete a role without contributing to shared thinking, or state a conclusion unrelated to the discussion's evidence.
How to Assess It
- Have groups discuss a shared article with assigned roles. Check each student for prepared evidence, one elaborating exchange, role completion, and a concluding takeaway.

Ways to Teach It
Assign facilitator, evidence-finder, challenger, and recorder cards for a group decision based on a short article.
Ask, ‘Which classmate's idea can you elaborate on, and what conclusion follows from the group's evidence?’
Play Elaborate or Repeat by sorting sample responses and revising repetitions into useful extensions.
Conduct a student council simulation that requires roles, persuasive comments, follow-up questions, and a final decision.
