What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students prepare for discussions and use what they read or studied to explore ideas. They follow norms, carry out roles, ask and answer focused questions, link comments, and explain their understanding afterward.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student arrives with a relevant note, fulfills an assigned role, and contributes ideas tied to the material. The student asks a useful follow-up question and reviews how the discussion changed or clarified understanding.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may perform a role mechanically without listening to the discussion. They may ask questions already answered, add disconnected comments, or summarize only their own contribution.
How to Assess It
- Run a five-minute group discussion with assigned roles and one prepared note each. Check for a linked comment, focused question, role completion, and final reflection.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups facilitator, evidence-finder, connector, and summarizer cards for a discussion of a short shared text.
Ask, ‘Which comment changed or clarified your thinking, and what question helped the group get there?’
Play Discussion Link, requiring each student to connect a prepared note to a previous speaker before contributing.
Hold a class committee meeting to plan a service project, using roles, follow-up questions, and a closing review.
