What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students prepare for discussion by reading or studying the assigned material. They use notes, text evidence, and relevant prior knowledge to explore ideas with others.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student arrives with useful evidence and refers to it accurately during discussion. The student connects prepared information to a peer’s point or the group question.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may prepare a summary that does not address the discussion topic. They may cite a detail without explaining how it supports their contribution.
How to Assess It
- Assign a brief text and discussion question. Ask each student to bring two notes, cite one, and connect it to another speaker’s idea.
