What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students prepare for discussion by reading or studying assigned material. They refer to relevant evidence to examine, question, and reflect on ideas with others.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student arrives with organized notes and cites evidence accurately while speaking. The student uses preparation to ask a probing question or reconsider an idea.

Common Misconceptions

Students may collect quotations without deciding what each one shows. They may mention evidence but fail to connect it to the discussion’s topic or claims.

How to Assess It

Assign a short text and discussion question. Require two evidence notes, one evidence-based contribution, and one follow-up question tied to a peer’s idea.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Annotate a text with claim, evidence, and question tabs before entering a discussion.

  2. Ask students which prepared detail could challenge or deepen the current idea.

  3. Play Evidence and Probe, pairing each cited detail with a question for the group.

  4. Research a school policy before discussing its strengths, limits, and possible revisions.
