What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students prepare for discussion by reading or researching assigned material. They refer to evidence to probe, connect, and reflect on ideas during the exchange.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student arrives with organized evidence notes and cites them accurately. The student uses preparation to ask a thoughtful question, extend a claim, or reconsider a view.

Common Misconceptions

Students may gather quotations without judging relevance. They may cite evidence as a final statement instead of using it to advance the discussion.

How to Assess It

Assign a source and discussion prompt. Require two evidence notes, one source-based contribution, and one probing response tied to another speaker.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Prepare claim, evidence, question, and reflection cards before a seminar.

  2. Ask students which prepared detail could complicate the group’s current conclusion.

  3. Play Evidence Probe, pairing each cited passage with a follow-up question.

  4. Research a community issue before discussing possible responses and tradeoffs.
