What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students prepare for discussion by reading or researching the material under study. They cite relevant evidence to probe, connect, and reflect on ideas.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student arrives with organized source notes and uses them accurately in discussion. The student builds on evidence with a probing question, connection, or reconsideration.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may gather quotations without evaluating relevance. They may cite research as a final answer instead of using it to deepen the exchange.
How to Assess It
- Assign a short source set and discussion prompt. Require two evidence notes, one source-based contribution, and one probing response to a peer.
