What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students prepare for discussion by reading or studying the assigned material. They bring relevant notes and connect prior knowledge to the group’s ideas.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student arrives with marked evidence or notes and refers to them while speaking. The student adds a relevant fact or question that moves the discussion forward.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may rely on memory without preparing evidence. They may read notes aloud without connecting them to the question or other speakers.
How to Assess It
- Assign a short passage and one discussion question. Check that each student brings one note, cites it, and connects it to a peer’s idea.
