What Students Need to Do

Students prepare through reading or research and refer to evidence while discussing. They follow norms, roles, goals, and deadlines, ask questions that prompt elaboration, keep discussion focused, and revise views when warranted.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student brings usable evidence, fulfills a role, and asks a question that deepens another speaker's idea. The student responds relevantly, redirects drift when needed, and identifies evidence that changed personal thinking.

Common Misconceptions

Students may mention research without connecting it to a point or ask questions designed only to challenge. They may defend an initial view after stronger evidence appears or redirect by silencing useful disagreement.

How to Assess It

Run a discussion with prepared evidence, roles, and a stated goal. Check each student for an elaborating question, relevant response, focus move, and evidence-based reflection.

   Give groups evidence cards, role cards, and a progress tracker for a timed discussion of a disputed issue.
