What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students ask questions that invite elaboration and answer others with relevant observations and ideas. They redirect discussion to the topic when needed.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student asks a focused follow-up, responds with substance, and makes an explicit link back to the discussion question. The redirection is respectful and useful.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may ask yes-or-no questions that do not elicit detail. They may announce that peers are off topic without connecting the new comment back.
How to Assess It
- During discussion, require one elaboration question, one relevant response, and one comment that connects a drifting idea back to the prompt.
