What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students pose and answer specific questions and elaborate on others’ remarks. Their comments add evidence, examples, explanations, or connections that advance the discussion.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student asks a focused question and answers with relevant detail. The response names a prior idea and extends it meaningfully.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may ask questions unrelated to the current point. They may repeat a peer’s remark or add detail that does not clarify it.
How to Assess It
- During discussion, require one specific question and one response that elaborates on a peer’s remark with evidence or an example.
