What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students pose and answer questions that connect a discussion to broader themes or ideas. They invite others in and clarify, verify, or challenge ideas and conclusions constructively.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student asks a question that broadens analysis and responds with evidence and reasoning. The student includes quieter peers and tests claims without dismissing speakers.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may ask broad questions unrelated to the current discussion. They may treat challenge as contradiction or clarification as simple repetition.
How to Assess It
- During a seminar, require each student to ask one broader-theme question, invite one peer, and clarify, verify, or challenge one claim with evidence.
