What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students pose and answer specific questions with enough elaboration and detail. Their comments contribute directly to the topic, text, or issue.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student asks a focused question and responds with relevant evidence, explanation, or example. Each contribution extends or clarifies the discussion.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may ask broad questions that cannot be answered from the material. They may give brief opinions without elaboration or shift to a new topic.
How to Assess It
- During a small-group discussion, require each student to ask one specific question and answer another with evidence plus one explanatory detail.
